2008/2009 US Bank Failures
Backstory:The number of banks that failed in 2008 is not historically large, but the size of some of the banks that failed is staggering -- and the cost to the FDIC is well into the billions. Indymac alone, a California bank steeped in risky real estate lending, ate up $9.4 Billion. So far in 2009, 13 banks have failed for a cost to the FDIC of $1.6B.
